Aurelio Ariza was born in 1952 at Puebla de los Infantes, Seville, Spain, and is professor of Pathology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and senior consultant at the Department of Pathology, Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol (HUGTP), Badalona, Barcelona, Spain. He obtained his MD degree at the University of Seville (1975), where he also trained in internal medicine (1977-1979). After pursuing his anatomic pathology residency training at the Yale-affiliated Hospital of St Raphael, New Haven, Connecticut, during the period 1980-1984, he completed his training with a fellowship in neuropathology (Prof EE Manuelidis) and a fellowship in surgical pathology (Prof J Rosai) at the Yale-New Haven Hospital (Yale University) during the period 1984-1988. He holds the certificates of the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology (1986) and Neuropathology (1988). Among others, he has been research coordinator of the HUGTP (1997-2000), research vice dean of the UAB Medical School (2001-2005), and president of the Spanish Society of Pathology (2007-2011). Currently, he is secretary of the European Society of Pathology, Spanish representative to the Union of European Medical Specialists Section of Pathology, and president of the National Commission for Anatomic Pathology of the Spanish Ministry of Health. Additionally, he has received the Professional Excellence Award of the Barcelona Medical College (2011), has been appointed member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (2012), and has been distinguished with the Ramón y Cajal Award by the Spanish Society of Pathology (2019). He has developed research lines on oncologic pathology and neuroinfection (JC virus), has been the principal investigator of nine research projects, and has authored or co-authored over 140 peer-reviewed articles. Additionally, he is research project evaluator for several agencies, collaborates with the editorial boards of various journals, and has co-authored three patents dealing with neurodegenerative diseases.
